Catalan World

Spanish as well as Catalan are official languages in Catalonia, whereas Catalan is recognised as the language belonging to Catalonia. The society usually expresses itself in both languages without diffuculty, and you will find very seldom people that refuse to speak either one. In the rural areas especially outside metropolitan Barcelona, mainly Catalan is used.

However, Catalan is not only spoken in Catalonia, but also in the
Balear islands, in Valencia, in the Pyrenees (Andorra), in East-Aragˇn, southern Frace and even in a city in Sardinia.

If you visit the country, I suggest that you learn some Catalan to be able to better appreciate the culture. You will get a different impression if you can approach the local people in their own tongue.
